A year after the release of her new movie “The Witch,” actress and comedian Janelle Monáe is back on the road.
Her new clothing line, Modern Style, launched on Saturday with more than 60 pieces from designers like Vera Wang, Burberry, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, and Prada.
Monáe, a longtime supporter of the arts and her longtime partner in the production of her show, “Modern Style,” also co-produced “The Wizard of Oz,” which is scheduled to premiere on the big screen next year.
While she has never made the transition from a “fashionista” to a “culture person,” Monáes wardrobe is clearly part of a broader trend of contemporary fashion taking place in Hollywood.
“I don’t think of myself as a fashionista, but I do think of my friends as fashionistas,” Monae told FoxNews.com.
“I like to have that conversation with people.
I like to think about how my wardrobe could look, but not like I’m wearing a dress.
I’m a very casual person.
It’s not something I do.
I wear a lot of things that aren’t fashionista-y.
But I do have a certain level of fashion that I like.”
In Monáu’s mind, her wardrobe is a reflection of her life as a creative.
“It’s just about being myself,” she said.
“It’s about having fun.
It doesn’t mean that it has to be a thing of fashion.
It could be anything.
I love doing it that way.
It is my style.”
Monáes first foray into fashion was at age 9 when she started to wear the long skirt that became the fashion of the time.
When she was 10, Monás mother introduced her to the fashion world by showing her a dress at the Hollywood Bowl and telling her that the dress looked like a witch’s dress.
Monae, who has a degree in political science and has also performed as a clown and singer, said she began wearing the dresses in college because she was drawn to their timeless appeal.
“In my youth, you could dress up and look good,” she explained.
“That was the most exciting thing for me.
I felt like I could do anything I wanted to do, but in my twenties, I realized, you know what, it’s not that easy.”
For her part, Moné said she believes in “finding your soul,” which has allowed her to wear a variety of styles.
“You find your soul in your clothes,” she noted.
“I wear things that are timeless.
I have a lot that I love and have worn before.
I feel like I know who I am.”
In her own way, Monay said she finds fashion a “way to express yourself.”
“I find that to be very liberating,” she added.
“You don’t have to think, ‘I have to do this.’
I can just do it.
I can say whatever I want.”
She said her goal in wearing the clothes is not just to look chic, but also to connect with her fans.
“The goal is to reach people who feel the same way,” she continued.
“To be able to say, ‘This is how I feel about this.’
That’s really important to me.”
The show will premiere in theaters on Oct. 13.
